The conflict began on 13 June 2025 when Israel opened Operation Rising Lion against Iran's nuclear and military sites. Iran answered with ballistic missiles and drones; the US struck Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan; a ceasefire later broke down. In July 2026, attacks on Gulf bases and commercial ships escalated into rival blockades and strikes on military and civilian infrastructure. Two US service members were killed in Jordan while defending against Iranian missile and drone attacks, after which the US launched new strikes on IRGC coastal surveillance, air-defense, maritime, missile and drone capabilities. Hormuz traffic is now reported far below its pre-war level.
