1912년 아돌프 주커가 유명 배우 영화사를 세웠고, 1914년 W.W. 호드킨슨이 파라마운트 픽쳐스 코퍼레이션을 만들어 전국 배급망을 깔았다(Paramount History). 1916년 두 회사가 합병하며 주요 할리우드 스튜디오가 됐고, 1927년 '날개'로 제1회 아카데미 작품상을 받았다.

1950년 반독점 판결에 따른 극장 체인 매각과 관객 취향 변화로 쇠퇴기에 들어섰고(Encyclopedia.com), 1966년 재정난 끝에 걸프+웨스턴에 인수됐다(Wikipedia). 1972년 '대부'가 비평과 흥행 양쪽에서 성공하며 명성을 되찾았다(Paramount History). 1989년 걸프+웨스턴은 사명을 파라마운트 커뮤니케이션즈로 바꿨고 1994년 비아콤에 인수됐다.

2000년대에는 '미션 임파서블 2', '트랜스포머' 등으로 박스오피스 성과를 냈다(Wikipedia). 2005년 비아콤이 CBS와 신 비아콤으로 갈라졌고, 2014년 CBS 올 액세스로 스트리밍을 시작했다. 2019년 둘이 다시 합쳐 비아콤CBS가 되고 샤리 레드스톤이 의장을 맡았다. 2021년 파라마운트+로 리브랜딩하고 2022년 사명을 파라마운트 글로벌로 바꾼 뒤, 2025년 스카이댄스 미디어와 합병해 파라마운트 스카이댄스가 출범했다(Britannica).

✦주인이 여섯 번 바뀌는 동안 살아남은 것은 회사가 아니라 파라마운트라는 이름이었고, 새 주인들은 매번 그 이름을 앞에 세웠다.
